The Story

Patrice is interested in and inspired by the stories behind the objects. By placing the objects outside their orginal context, their timeless beauty can be revealed.

The journey that the objects have taken is fascinating. Some have existed for centuries. By reusing them, their journey can continue endlessly. In this way, traditional craftmanship and cultural traditions are preserved and kept alive.

The story of the artwork: 'Footprints'

Patrice found six pairs of Indian native American beated Moccasins, from the early 1900s. These moccasins she found at an artdealer in Canada, who acquired these from a collection of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. These moccasins, crafted by indigenous artisans, showcase intricate beadwork an quilwork, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of their creators. The moccasins not only served practical purposes but also held cultural and spiritual significance, often used in ceremonies and as expressions of identity.

On the back, there's a woven mat from Bahia, Brazil, crafted by local artists. During a trip trough Brazil, Patrice found the mat at a local studio. Combining the Indian Moccasins with the Brazilian mat not only brings together diverse materials and techniques but also celebrates the unique cultural narratives and artistic expressions of their respective origins.

Each moccasin is attached to a clam made of bronze. The mat is painted in various shades of blue. On the background some pieces of special hard leather coloured in dark blue. The frame is made of bamboo, painted in gloss dark blue.
